Spring is often squeezed in Chattanooga. We are usually frost free by mid-April and by the end of May temperatures typically hit 90 F/32 C. The window for getting cool season veggies like potatoes or lettuce into the ground doesn’t stay open long. If we wait to plant lettuce until it is safe to put out tomatoes, the lettuce will likely be bitter from the heat before it gets very big.
This year we are especially late since February was very cold and early March was rainy. The soil is still on the soggy side, but the forecast is now looking good. Today’s high is expected to be 78 F/25 C and there is only one rainy day in the 10 day forecast. Yesterday, I smelled that great “Spring is here” aroma from the earth as I pulled some weeds.
Spring is short. Life is short. Post is short. Got to get to the garden.
