The porch is the place for this box of basil. The tomatoes are coming in so having some basil just out the door is convenient for all the good things that put basil and tomatoes together. I’ve got more basil in the garden for pesto quantities.
When I transplanted these basil plants, I thought I had 3 of the purple variety and two green. If you look closely at the middle plant its variegated leaves show. When it was smaller it looked much more like the outer purple plants. It is the result of saving seeds from last year when I also had the two varieties growing closely.
The original purple was seed from Baker Creek of Red Freddy Genovese Basil. The green is a common sweet basil. The flavor of these varieties is very similar. The darker provides more healthy anthocyanins. Its great to get good looks, good taste, and good health from a box.
